The WhatsApp Cloud API (used directly or via a BSP like Twilio, 360dialog or WATI) is the official, compliant route — best for high-volume, verified business messaging, with per-conversation Meta fees and Business verification. Two 2026 changes matter when you compare them. Meta’s Business Solution terms, effective 15 January 2026, do not allow providers whose primary product is a general-purpose AI assistant to use the platform — structured support, booking and notification bots are still fine. Most “WhatsApp API” products are the official Cloud API — either direct from Meta or resold by a Business Solution Provider (BSP) such as Twilio, 360dialog or WATI. It’s the right call for enterprise-scale, compliant, template-based messaging — but you pay Meta’s per-conversation fees (often plus a platform fee or markup), and you need Business verification and an approved number.
Two dated changes have moved that trade-off in 2026. First, Meta’s Business Solution terms — effective 15 January 2026, and applied to new users since 15 October 2025 — do not allow providers of general-purpose AI assistants to use the platform when the assistant is the primary functionality being offered. Structured bots for support, bookings, order tracking and notifications are explicitly still allowed; an open-ended assistant is not. Second, from 1 October 2026 Meta begins charging for service messages, which had been free inside the 24-hour customer-service window since November 2024 — a flat per-message rate with no volume tiers, with rates published in September.
SocialMate takes a different route: it automates the WhatsApp app on your own computer, using your own existing number. It is not the WhatsApp Business Solution, so it is not the product those terms and those rates govern — there are no per-message fees and no approval, and your chats and contacts stay on your machine.
