SocialMate vs the WhatsApp Cloud API

The official Business API route — Meta Cloud API and its BSPs (Twilio, 360dialog, WATI) — vs SocialMate, the self-hosted desktop app with no per-message fees and no Meta approval.

In short

The WhatsApp Cloud API (used directly or via a BSP like Twilio, 360dialog or WATI) is the official, compliant route — best for high-volume, verified business messaging, with per-conversation Meta fees and Business verification. SocialMate is the self-hosted alternative: it automates your own WhatsApp number from your own machine, so there are no per-message fees and no approval, with a built-in anti-ban pacing engine and a local HTTP API on a flat license ($10/mo or $99/yr). Two 2026 changes matter when you compare them. Meta’s Business Solution terms, effective 15 January 2026, do not allow providers whose primary product is a general-purpose AI assistant to use the platform — structured support, booking and notification bots are still fine. And from 1 October 2026 Meta charges for service messages sent inside the 24-hour window, at a flat per-message rate with no volume tiers. SocialMate is not the Business Platform: it drives your own linked device, so neither applies — and neither does the green tick, template infrastructure or official support. Choose the Cloud API for official scale and compliance; choose SocialMate for flat pricing, privacy and full local control. A practical difference: SocialMate keeps your full message history and media on your machine, whereas the Cloud API deletes messages and media from Meta’s servers after about 30 days.

Most “WhatsApp API” products are the official Cloud API — either direct from Meta or resold by a Business Solution Provider (BSP) such as Twilio, 360dialog or WATI. It’s the right call for enterprise-scale, compliant, template-based messaging — but you pay Meta’s per-conversation fees (often plus a platform fee or markup), and you need Business verification and an approved number.

Two dated changes have moved that trade-off in 2026. First, Meta’s Business Solution terms — effective 15 January 2026, and applied to new users since 15 October 2025 — do not allow providers of general-purpose AI assistants to use the platform when the assistant is the primary functionality being offered. Structured bots for support, bookings, order tracking and notifications are explicitly still allowed; an open-ended assistant is not. Second, from 1 October 2026 Meta begins charging for service messages, which had been free inside the 24-hour customer-service window since November 2024 — a flat per-message rate with no volume tiers, with rates published in September.

SocialMate takes a different route: it automates the WhatsApp app on your own computer, using your own existing number. It is not the WhatsApp Business Solution, so it is not the product those terms and those rates govern — there are no per-message fees and no approval, and your chats and contacts stay on your machine. The trade is real and worth stating plainly: you also give up the green tick, template messaging, official support and Meta-scale infrastructure, and you take on the ban risk that comes with any unofficial route.

Choose SocialMate if you want to automate your own number from your own machine — no per-message fees, no approval, data kept local — and a single-machine, self-hosted tool fits your scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is SocialMate the official WhatsApp Business API?
No. SocialMate is independent software that automates the WhatsApp app on your own machine, using your own number. It is not the official WhatsApp Business API and is not affiliated with WhatsApp or Meta. For the official API, use Meta Cloud API or a BSP such as Twilio, 360dialog or WATI.
Why are there no per-message fees with SocialMate?
Because SocialMate runs WhatsApp on your own computer rather than routing messages through Meta’s Cloud API, there are no per-conversation Meta fees. You pay a flat license ($10/mo or $99/yr) no matter how much you send.
Do I need Meta Business verification?
No. The Cloud API route requires Business verification and an approved number; SocialMate uses your own existing WhatsApp number with no approval step.
When should I use the Cloud API instead?
Use the official Cloud API when you need verified business messaging at high volume, the green tick, template messages, or strict compliance — and you’re fine paying Meta’s per-message fees.
Can I run a general-purpose AI assistant on the WhatsApp Cloud API?
Not as your primary product. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Solution terms, effective 15 January 2026 (and applied to new users from 15 October 2025), do not allow providers of AI or machine-learning technologies — large language models, generative AI platforms or general-purpose assistants — to use the Business Solution when that is the primary functionality being provided. Structured bots for support, bookings, order tracking and notifications remain allowed. SocialMate is not the Business Solution: it drives your own linked device on your own number, so your own model can hold an open-ended conversation. Whatever route you take, WhatsApp’s own terms still apply to how you use your account, and automation always carries some risk.
Are replies inside the 24-hour window still free?
Until 1 October 2026. Service messages have not been charged since November 2024, but Meta has said it will begin charging for them per message from that date, at a flat rate with no volume tiers; the rates publish in September 2026. Utility and authentication templates are already billable. SocialMate has no per-message meter at all — the license is flat whether you send ten messages a month or thousands.
