SocialMate vs WAHA

WAHA is the quickest way to put a WhatsApp HTTP API on a server, and it is free. This is what it deliberately does not do, and what that costs you.

In short

WAHA (WhatsApp HTTP API) is a self-hosted Docker image that exposes WhatsApp as a REST API with webhooks, and since version 2026.6.1 it is entirely free — the old Core/Plus split was removed, so unlimited sessions, media, storage options and security all ship in the public image, and the only paid tier is a voluntary $5/mo community subscription that grants no extra features. It is the fastest self-hosted option to stand up. What it does not include is an anti-ban pacing engine, a message archive with full-text search, a scheduling queue, or a user interface — you build those, and you run, secure and update the container yourself. SocialMate occupies the same self-hosted, no-per-message-fee category and deploys the same way (Docker or a Linux VPS with a web admin console), with the pacing engine, archive, search, smart queue, GUI, automatic updates and support already built, on a flat $10/mo or $99/yr license — and it also runs as a desktop app with no server at all.

WAHA earns its reputation: a single Docker image, a QR code, and you have a WhatsApp HTTP API. Several engines to choose from, clear docs, and as of version 2026.6.1 no paid tier whatsoever — the Core/Plus split was dropped and everything that used to require a subscription now ships in the free public image. The maintainer kept a $5/month community tier that grants no extra features and exists purely to fund the work. If someone tells you WAHA charges for media or multi-session, they are quoting a version that no longer exists.

So the comparison is not about price. It is about scope. WAHA gives you the protocol as HTTP; it does not try to be the application on top. There is no warm-up schedule, no per-number rate ceiling, no risk score, no quiet hours — nothing that notices your workflow is sending faster than a human could and slows it down. There is no searchable message archive, no scheduling queue, and no console for someone on your team who does not use curl. And you own the container: the host, the backups, the TLS, the upgrades.

SocialMate is a maintained commercial product rather than an open one, which is the real trade. In exchange the safety layer already exists — 6-phase warm-up, per-number minute/hour/day caps, live risk scoring with automatic cooling, jitter, night-mode quiet hours, per-account device-fingerprint isolation — alongside a local archive with full-text search, a smart queue with scheduling and retry, an admin GUI, automatic updates and support. It self-hosts exactly like WAHA does, and it also runs on your desktop if you would rather not run a server at all.

Honest head-to-head

SocialMate vs WAHA (WhatsApp HTTP API)

WAHA (WhatsApp HTTP API) The quickest self-hosted API to get running — one Docker image, several engines, good docs, and since 2026.6.1 every feature is in the free public image with no paid tier at all.

Note You host, secure, back up and update the container. No anti-ban engine, searchable archive, scheduling queue or admin interface.

Which should you choose?

Choose WAHA if you want a free, open, self-hosted HTTP API running this afternoon and you are comfortable building the pacing, storage and interface around it — it is well made, it is genuinely free, and for a developer who wants exactly an API it is hard to beat. Choose SocialMate if you would rather not build that layer: the same self-hosted route with no per-message fees, plus the anti-ban engine, searchable archive, smart queue, GUI, updates and support already included, on a flat $10/mo or $99/yr license, deployed on Docker, a VPS or your own desktop. Both drive a real number over the unofficial WhatsApp Web protocol, so both carry ban risk; the difference is whether the system does anything about it on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Does WAHA still have a paid Plus tier?
No. WAHA removed the Core/Plus split in version 2026.6.1 — unlimited sessions, multimedia messages, all storage options and the security features now ship in the free public Docker image, and there is no separate Plus image or private registry to authenticate against. The maintainer kept a single $5/month community tier on Patreon, Boosty or crypto that grants no additional features and exists to fund development. Comparisons that still quote a $19/month Plus plan are out of date.
If WAHA is free, why pay for SocialMate?
Because the licence fee was never the difference. WAHA is an HTTP API; SocialMate is the application around one. The anti-ban pacing engine, the searchable local archive, the scheduling queue, the admin console, automatic updates and support are all work you would otherwise do yourself on top of WAHA. If you want to do that work, or you only need raw API access, WAHA is the better answer and this page is happy to say so.
Does WAHA include an anti-ban engine?
No. WAHA gives you HTTP access to the WhatsApp Web protocol; warm-up, per-number rate limits, risk scoring and human-like timing are the responsibility of whatever you build on top. SocialMate ships all of them: a 6-phase warm-up, per-number minute/hour/day caps, live risk scoring with automatic cooling, jitter and night-mode quiet hours.
Can SocialMate run in Docker like WAHA?
Yes. SocialMate 2.0 runs headless on a Linux VPS as a Docker image or a one-line systemd install, managed from a web admin console in your browser — one persisted data volume is one license seat. It needs no separate database or cache alongside it, and the same application also runs on Windows, macOS or Linux desktop if you would rather not operate a server.
Which one is safer for my WhatsApp number?
Neither is safe in an absolute sense — both automate a real number over the unofficial Web protocol, and any tool that claims to be ban-proof is not telling you the truth. The practical difference is what happens by default. Nothing in WAHA slows an over-eager workflow down; SocialMate passes every send through warm-up, rate caps and a risk check, and on the desktop it sends from your own residential IP rather than a datacenter one. That lowers a risk factor rather than removing it, and new numbers still need warming slowly.
